Cyanotype Animation with Lije
Space is limited; RSVP required
Workshop led by
-
Lije is an artist and educator based in the Bay Area. They work with students ranging from elementary school to senior citizens, and are always excited to dive into new mediums. Lije's work often explores the power of cute—how soft aesthetics can be used as tools of persuasion, subversion, and surprise. They are especially fascinated by the history of cute imagery in propaganda and soft power, and love using those as tools to disarm an audience.
Experience the magic of animation in this mixed media, 2-hour workshop. We’ll begin with the absolute basics of animation, exploring how a sequence of still images transforms into a moving picture. Using mylar, participants will hand-draw a short animation, layering frames to see their piece evolve in real-time. We’ll then take our works out into the sunlight, using the cyanotype process to expose our drawings onto large 11x17 sheets. After exposing our paper and letting it develop in a water wash, we’ll use the Stop Motion Studio app to capture our sun-printed frames and watch our animations come to life in striking Prussian blue. This workshop is a perfect blend of old-school analog chemistry and modern digital storytelling.
