All My Trees

In Conversation

  • Minoo Moallem is a Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at UC Berkeley.

Rakhshan Banietemad’s career-long focus on strong, independent, uncompromisingly intelligent women continues with this portrait of Mahlagha Mallah, the founder of the first environmental NGO in Iran and the country’s eldest environmental activist. Like all Banietemad’s work, it soon moves beyond a portrayal of one character to instead convey the state of an entire nation and its environment.

Mother of the Earth

Mahnaz Afzali, Iran, 2017

Banietemad was an artistic consultant for Mahnaz Afzali’s look at the environmental activist Hayedeh Shirzadi and her husband, who focus on turning garbage dumping and waste into recycling and fertilizer. This film is a good companion to All My Trees for its focus on the environment, waste, and the power of women to change society.
