Blind is . . . fascinating . . . it is a forceful exploration of both systematic education and the nature of the documentary form.
Katherine Dieckmann, Village Voice
In the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, Frederick Wiseman found rich subject matter—enough for four films—and an opportunity to provide deeper, reflexive consideration of the use of image and sound in his process. With an ensemble of visually impaired pupils and educators, Wiseman’s usual embrace of shorthand body language cues to succinctly punctuate power dynamics was constrained, resulting in a reorientation of the senses. Beyond the curriculum of science, math, and literature, the students are taught self-sufficiency. A long take tracking a young boy named Jason as he solo navigates from classroom to classroom is one of the most unforgettable moments in Wiseman’s oeuvre.
