Introduction and Post-Screening Book SigningDavid Thomson is a noted film critic and historian who has authored more than twenty books, including A Sudden Flicker of Light: A Revisionist History of Movies (Simon & Schuster, 2026).
Jean-Paul Belmondo, Anna Karina, Dirk Sanders, Samuel Fuller,
David Thomson has been called “the greatest living writer on the movies.” A career capstone of sorts, A Sudden Flicker of Light: A Revisionist History of Movies is a one-volume history of film as illuminating and provocative as his classic A Biographical Dictionary of Film. This revisionist history is as alert to technology and business as it is to art and fun in tracing our pursuit of the lifelike instead of life. Thomson will speak about his new book and present Jean-Luc Godard’s Pierrot le fou, a French noir in sunlight starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina. Godard’s audacious take on the lovers-on-the-run genre is lensed in ravishing color by Raoul Coutard.
