The Films of Apparatus and Early Works by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha
-
IntroductionTausif Noor is the Curatorial Associate at BAMPFA.
This screening pairs films by contributors to Apparatus: Selected Writings (1980), edited by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, with Cha’s Super 8 films and videos from the early 1970s. Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon, created with her husband, Alexander Hammid, examines interiority and visionary experience through dreamlike sequences. Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s 1977 film honors the influential poet Stéphane Mallarmé—a major influence on Cha—alongside revolutionaries shot dead during the Paris Commune of 1871. In Cha’s work from the early 1970s, the artist explores film with performance, signaling the fluid approach to form she pursued throughout her career.
