Introduction and Post-Screening Discussion
Fanny Ardant, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Philippe Laudenbach, Jean-Pierre Kalfon,
François Truffaut’s entertainingly lighthearted final film provides a stylish 1980s French tribute to Hollywood’s golden age of screwball comedies and film noir, with a radiant Fanny Ardant and oft-indignant Jean-Louis Trintignant filling in for stars like Audrey Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. A real-estate agent and his secretary must pause their continual bickering to investigate a series of rapidly multiplying murders before they’re either jailed or killed, all while balancing a parade of prostitutes, film projectionists, clumsy gumshoes, and constant MacGuffins. With tongues firmly in cheek and nods to Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks, Truffaut and team are having a ball, with Nestor Almendros’s black-and-white cinematography providing the perfect noir tone.
