Contemplative Salt Bath

In this workshop, participants experience a salt bath as an invitation to contemplate alternatives to modernity’s paradigms of determinacy and solutionism while imagining new relationships to our horizons. Led by artist Beatriz Escobar, this experience draws inspiration from her floating practice, which began in the warm bays of Brazil, where she engaged in her grandmother’s ritual of floating.

On a first-come, first-served basis, the artist will welcome fifteen attendees as participants, while the remaining attendees will witness the salt bath. The workshop will begin with a grounding exercise, followed by a reading, and then the salt bath. To conclude, attendees will be invited to write down their reflections and, if desired, share them with the group.

Beatriz Escobar works with participatory art projects, relational objects, and the body, engaging decolonial imaginaries and examining experiences of otherness. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, she is constantly entangling herself and her audience in constructed and shifting power dynamics. Escobar has led talks and workshops at the Queens Museum, New York, and Stanford University. She holds an MFA from California College of the Arts (CCA) and was a 2018 Creative Dissent Fellow at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and a recipient of a CCA Impact Award for her Amazonas Riverine Program. She was an Affiliate Artist at Headlands Center for the Arts.
