Curator's Circle: Reception | A + Lecture: San Quentin Project

Open to Curator’s Circle members at the $2,500 level and above

Please join us for wine and small bites in BAMPFA’s Babette cafe before this important and fascinating lecture in Arts + Design Mondays @ BAMPFA. As co-host of this event, Shannon Jackson  — Associate Vice Chancellor for the Arts + Design — will share thoughts about the significance of the project, in dialogue with featured artists and speakers, Nigel Poor and Michael Nelson.

This event responds to The San Quentin Project: Nigel Poor and the Men of San Quentin State Prison, on view at BAMPFA through November 17, 2019. The exhibition follows the evolution of artist Nigel Poor’s social art practice and her collaboration with the men incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California.

In the evening’s lecture, Poor will present collaborative projects she has worked on inside San Quentin Prison, including the work currently on view at BAMPFA and the award-winning podcast Ear Hustle. Poor is joined by Michael Nelson, a former San Quentin State Prison resident whose essay about photography is included in The San Quentin Project.

Though normally closed on Mondays, The San Quentin Project: Nigel Poor and the Men of San Quentin State Prison exhibition will be open starting at 5 p.m., prior to the program. This Curator’s Circle event is a collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Arts + Design Initiative, which has co-organized the evening’s lecture as part of the Arts + Design Mondays @ BAMPFA lecture series.

This event is open to BAMPFA Curator’s Circle members at the $2,500 level and above, along with invited guests. Space is limited and reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. RSVP to Jennifer Sime at jlsime@berkeley.edu or 510-643-9632.
