One of the key figures of the emerging Iranian New Wave of the early 1970s, director Sohrab Shahid Saless (Still Life; A Simple Event) fled the Shah’s regime to West Germany in 1975, where his contemplative works on exile and migration soon lent a different lens to the New German Cinema. Saless’s first film in Germany, Far from Home follows the travails, alienations, and periodic desires of a Turkish guest worker under the gray skies of Kreuzberg. “The progenitor of poetic realism in Iranian cinema . . . Saless’s style and approach strongly influenced the work of Abbas Kiarostami” (Historical Dictionary of Middle Eastern Cinema).
