The Films of Tomonari Nishikawa



Tomonari Nishikawa (1969–2025) made films that manifested his interest in the materials and apparatus of cinema. Ambitious, intricate, and precisely executed, the films are a thrilling cinematic dialogue between the places, spaces, and architecture he documented and the filmstock, cameras, and lenses he uses to record them. While abstract, Nishikawa’s films always remain anchored by the specific locations where they were shot, often conjuring a more profound sense of place than a more conventional movie might achieve. Using specific new systems or techniques for each project, Nishikawa created timeless works that inspire wonder and encourage reflection on the process of their making.
