Gallery + Studio / Lines That Connect: Pattern, Repetition, and Belonging

For ages 6–12 with accompanying adult(s).

Led by Rivka Valérie Louissaint, this is a two-part workshop that integrates an interactive gallery tour with a related art project. Sign up in the Art Lab ten minutes ahead of the session, which begins with a short gallery tour at 11:30 AM.

Take a guided tour of selected artworks in the exhibition Some Particular Heaven: Ideas of Utopia in the BAMPFA Collection to see how artists can use a series of small gestures to build complex and dynamic forms. Then use a range of drawing materials to create your own layered composition through a process of cumulative mark making. Discover how repetition and visual rhythm can express both individuality and connection.

Rivka Valérie Louissaint is a Haitian cultural worker based in Oakland and a 2022 graduate of UC Berkeley’s MFA program. Their practice includes mixed-media visual work, writing, performance, education, and community organizing. Louissant held the 2022–24 Gerado Marin Fellowship at the University of San Francisco, and their work has been exhibited within and beyond the Bay Area.
