Workshop led byAfter studying sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design and cofounding the video collective Videofreex in New York, Mary Curtis Ratcliff moved to the Bay Area, where she makes sculpture, mixed media pieces, and two-dimensional artwork and teaches art to children and families. Her work is represented in the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Oakland Museum of California. As a member of Mercury 20 Gallery since 2008, Ratcliff has participated in over two dozen solo and group shows.
This two-part workshop integrates an interactive gallery tour with a related art project. Sign up in the Art Lab ten minutes ahead of the session, which begins with a short gallery tour at 11:30 AM.
Some artworks ask us to question our immediate recognition of what we see. Are we looking at a shape made from metal or a stand-in for our own body? Inspired by the three-dimensional metal forms in Zaroulie Abdaliam’s sculpture Close of Winter, use basic materials (including extra-large pipe cleaners) to explore height, width, and depth as you build a vertical sculpture of an abstract body, embellished with curlicues, zigzags, and circles for extra personality.
