On a New Year’s Eve during the Iran-Iraq War, an “ordinary” middle-aged mother comforts her panicked grown daughter through an Iraqi missile attack and later sends her son off to the front. Years later, around another New Year’s Eve and yet another conflict, she again deals with the effects of war on her country and her family. A powerful examination of the human cost of war, grief, loneliness, and society’s inability to support its wounded, Gilaneh may revolve around an Iranian family, but its themes are universal.
