One of Vitti’s first comic vehicles was this proto-feminist comedy about a traditional Sicilian woman who travels to the United Kingdom seeking the man who dishonored her, and by extension her family. Vitti’s mocking humor is perfect for the role, an ardent, and armed, avenger chasing her fleeing fiancé, as she gradually becomes aware of possibilities beyond her quest. In the tradition of Mario Monicelli’s Big Deal on Madonna Street, this film cleverly satirizes old-world mores while also examining Italy’s relationship to other countries, and the concomitant preoccupation with provincialism versus cosmopolitanism.
