A trip in itself, The Holy Mountain chronicles one man’s search for enlightenment through a dizzying array of surreal set pieces. Inspired by René Daumal’s novel Mount Analogue, as well as Alejandro Jodorowsky’s own spiritual studies and psychedelic experiences, the film’s deeply sacrilegious and antimilitaristic imagery remains as beautiful and intriguing today as when it first scandalized audiences at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. Unseen for decades due to a dispute with the producer, Jodorowsky’s perceptually destabilizing alchemical puzzle has only been illuminating cinema screens once again since 2007.
