Based on a play by Natalia Ginzburg, who also contributed to the screenplay, Luciano Salce’s comedy depicts the early days of a marriage between Giuliana (Vitti), a romantic bohemian woman, and Pietro, a straitlaced lawyer from a bourgeois family. Told partially in flashbacks, as Giuliana regales the maid Victoria with stories of an ill-fated infatuation and the events leading up to meeting Pietro, the film is mostly set in the newlyweds’ fabulous modern apartment, and the more conventionally furnished flat of their quirky expat neighbor. Replete with rapid-fire dialogue and classic screwball timing, the movie explores the challenges of an unconventional matchup, amid the social pressures of the time.
