featuring

Chloë Sevigny,

Michael Almereyda and Courtney Stephens combine forces to chronicle the life and times of influential scientist and psychonaut John Lilly (1915–2001). Assembling archival documentation of Lilly’s projects, talks, and interviews; footage gleaned from popular and ephemeral sources; contemporary interviews with surviving collaborators; a cameo by Alejandro Jodorowsky; and narration by Chloë Sevigny, the filmmakers create a multifaceted, critical lens through which to view the accomplishments of a revolutionary thinker whose quest to understand the mysteries of the mind—via dolphins, isolation tanks, LSD, ketamine, and more—is woven into the culture and counterculture of the twentieth century.
