Workshop led byKaya Fortune is a Bay Area arts educator whose practice includes African American history, music, visual and spiritual arts, and fashion design. He believes art is a healing force in children’s lives and encourages his students to find their own voice and identity through art making. Teaching art to children is Fortune’s inspiration for creating his own work, which he has exhibited in a range of community and professional venues in and beyond his native California.
This two-part workshop integrates an interactive gallery tour with a related art project. Sign up in the Art Lab ten minutes ahead of the session, which begins with a short gallery tour at 11:30.
The artworks you will see in Routed West were made by African American quiltmakers, mostly women, from families who lived in the American South before moving west to California. While they were made mostly to meet household needs, these quilts also carry the artistic and spiritual values of the women who made them—values passed on from the quiltmakers to future generations. In this workshop, you will construct a multilayered quilt design using geometric shapes, symbols, and stamps to convey a visual expression of legacy and creative liberation.
