Weaving Histories: Lee ShinJa’s Art from the 1950s to the 2000s

Presented in partnership with UC Berkeley's Center for Korean Studies

In this illustrated lecture, art historian Sunglim Kim, who specializes in Korean art from the premodern to contemporary periods, traces the artistic evolution of Lee ShinJa. She addresses the development of Lee’s style, technique, and use of materials in relation to both the artist’s personal history and the broader story of Korean textile art during a period of major social and cultural change.

Dr. Sunglim Kim is Associate Professor of Art History and Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages at Dartmouth College. Her current book project, Korean Art Herstory: Gender, Art, and Politics, features Lee Shin Ja among other women artists, collectors, curators, and critics in Korean art history. Among Dr. Kim’s numerous publications is Flowering Plum and Curio Cabinets: The Culture of Objects in Late Choson Korean Art.
