Kate MacKay is a Film Curator at BAMPFA.
Taking a ride with three long-haul truck drivers, filmmaker Amy Reid documents their labor and the world they inhabit while recording their stories, observations on the economic importance of trucking, and reflections on what it is like to be one of very few women in the profession. Reid’s assured 16mm cinematography registers the vast landscapes traversed as well as the details of gas stations, truckstops, motel rooms, and truck cab interiors. Paying close attention to the sonic environment, Reid captures the radio signals, broadcasts, and audiobooks that keep the drivers company, gently revealing unspoken aspects of their distinct personalities.
