Max Frisch, Journal I-III
Max Frisch's novelsread like diaries, his diaries like novels. This cinematic response tothe writings of Frisch, one of Switzerland's greatest contemporarywriters, combines images and quotes from several of his published worksin an attempt to "re-write" his novel Montauk. That story, which detailsan intense love affair between an aging writer and a much younger woman,is here treated as autobiographical. Using Frisch's diaries of 1946-49and 1966-71, director Richard Dindo brings forth memories of bothfictional and real characters in the author's life, and takes hisreal/fictional author to New York, where locations from Montauk andothers of Frisch's works are traced. The author appears briefly (inpreviously-shot documentary footage) in this film which captures theessence of the man's creative process.
