Our Sister Hedy
(Si qian jin)
-
IntroductionPaul Fonoroff is an expert on Chinese cinema who lived for years in Hong Kong and is currently based in Bangkok.
Jeanette Lin Tsui, Julie Yeh Feng, Dolly Soo Fung, Mu Hong,
Musical opening credits introduce the four grown Kong sisters: Hilda, Helen, Hedy, and Hazel. They live under one roof with their widower father. Hedy, the titular tomboy (a fencing instructor, preternaturally good at tennis), plays matchmaker for the workhorse of the family, the eldest, Hilda. The statuesque, seductive Helen keeps getting in the way. The youngest, Hazel, elopes. The sisters quarrel, as families do, as they navigate an interweaving series of marriage plots reminiscent of Jane Austen. Director Doe Ching “casts the four actresses in roles that fit perfectly like a glove” (Hong Kong Film Archive).
