Workshop led byJasmine Nyende explores African American legacies in punk, DIY, and craft culture in a practice that incorporates collaborative weaving, performative poetry, and hand knitted clothing and sculpture, and pursues a Black femme handspun aesthetic through abstraction and storytelling. Over the past eight years, she has taught, performed, and exhibited internationally. She completed her MFA at UC Berkeley in 2025.
This two-part workshop integrates an interactive gallery tour with a related art project. Sign up in the Art Lab ten minutes ahead of the session, which begins with a short gallery tour at 11:30.
Inspired by quilt designs in Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California and your own personal history, collaborate with a family member to create a patterned collage that incorporates ideas of home, journey, and resilience. Experiment with a range of simple materials, including construction paper and fabric scraps, to build a “personal landscape quilt block” on which to add your own images and writing.
