Legendary filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui, whose incendiary 1969 film The Cow announced the Iranian New Wave to the world, followed up with this adaptation of Georg Büchner’s notorious tale of madness, Woyzeck, here set in contemporary Iran. For Amos Vogel in the Village Voice, the film “firmly establishes Mehrjui as a major talent whose successful fusing of pathos and humor and preoccupation with the poor resembles in its ferocity nothing less than Chaplin or the early De Sica.” One of Iran’s most successful, creative directors, Mehrjui was tragically murdered in 2023, along with his wife and collaborator, Vahideh Mohammadifar.
