Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk

  • Introduction

Ussama Makdisi is a Professor of History and Chancellor’s Chair at UC Berkeley.

Unable to enter Gaza to document the effects of the ongoing conflict firsthand, in April 2024, Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi contacted Palestinian photojournalist and poet Fatma Hassona and began filming their video chats. Interspersed with Hassona’s photographs, these conversations are the heart of this remarkably intimate account of life in Gaza. Hopeful and almost always smiling, Hassona describes the brutal, increasingly untenable reality of existence under bombardment. Hassona was killed by Israeli airstrike in April 2025, along with nine family members, but her work and words—“I must keep going and I must document everything. To be in this history. To be me.”—live on.
