Rethinking Abstraction: Chinese Calligraphy Workshop
Space is limited; RSVP required
Led by Peiting C. Lin, Instructor of Chinese Calligraphy at the UC Berkeley Art Studio, this workshop introduces the fundamental techniques, materials, and aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy, focusing on the unique qualities that allow it to simultaneously represent the concrete and express the abstract. In conversation with the concerns of the exhibition Object Oriented, explore the ways Chinese calligraphy prompts us to rethink our assumptions about abstraction, as image and word meet as one. No knowledge of Chinese language is necessary.
Peiting C. Li is Instructor of Chinese Calligraphy at the UC Berkeley Art Studio. She received her PhD in Chinese history, focusing on medicine and print culture in Shanghai. She is currently writing a book about the notion of practice in medicine and art. Recently, her essay “Speak, Ink” on calligraphy and materiality was published in Arcade. She also leads a biweekly calligraphy class/community gathering at Teance in West Berkeley.
