Roundtable Reading / The Vanishing of Lake Peigneur by Allan Wolf, art by Jose Pimienta
Recommended for ages 7 and up with accompanying adult(s).
At Roundtable Reading, young readers read aloud to one another from the opening pages of a good book. Children who participate will receive a copy of the book to continue reading at home. No advance sign-up needed; just show up promptly at 2:30 PM ready to read!
Reading led by Mardawn Wendt, librarian, Berkeley Arts Magnet Elementary School.
Home to catfish, crawdads, shrimp, spoonbills, and even a gator or two, Lake Peigneur was also a hub of human activity and industry, including the Diamond Crystal Salt Mines. As the lake itself narrates in this gripping blend of history, science, and real-life drama, water and salt mix all too well. On November 20, 1980, a random drill hole produced a vortex that drained the lake into the enormous caverns below—caverns created by the removal of salt—and the lake was gone.
