The Secret of Roan Inish

Recommended for ages 11+. After her mother's death, Fiona is sent to live with her grandparents in a remote Irish fishing village. It is there that she is told the family legend of an ancestor who married a Selkie-a creature in Celtic myth that is half human, half seal-and the tale of how her baby brother was washed out to sea in his cradle. His disappearance occurred off the beach of the rocky island of Roan Inish where Fiona's kin lived for generations, but were forced to leave for a more promising life on the mainland. As the myths and magic surrounding her family are revealed, Fiona begins to take a more active role in uncovering the mysteries and reclaiming the island they once called home. Don't think you can believe in Selkies? You just might be surprised.
