    Maya Sidhu is a Lecturer in the Department of French at UC Berkeley. She is currently writing a book on the films of Alice Diop.

Upon visiting Senegal for the first time after her parents’ deaths, Alice Diop began filming in the courtyard of her mother’s former home, documenting the everyday existence and conversations of her aunts and cousins. Within this exclusively female space, Diop mused, "I’m sort of filming what could have been my life. . . . I measure from here what exile transforms."

Black life in art within the halls of the Louvre, and Black art in life in the streets of Bed-Stuy anchor Diop’s newest short, inspired by Robin Coste Lewis’s poem “Voyage of the Sable Venus.” A woman (Kayije Kagame, Saint Omer) observes Western paintings of Black subjects in the Louvre; later another woman encounters the beauty of street life in Brooklyn. “I wanted to offer the center to these Black women, who are only looked at on the margins,” noted Diop.
