Looking Back at Night Watch: A Floating Media Arts Installation That Activated and Animated the San Francisco Bay with Shimon Attie

In this presentation, in addition to sharing a brief overview of his work, Shimon Attie focuses on his recent project Night Watch. The installation was presented to the public and circulated in San Francisco Bay in September 2021, following its initial debut in the waterways around New York City in 2018. Attie presents still and moving images from the project and discusses its impact and reception in the Bay Area, comparing it to the artwork’s reception in New York City.

Attie is a multimedia artist whose work comprises photographs, video and multimedia installations, new media, and works on paper. Concerned with questions and themes surrounding memory, place, and identity, Attie’s early work reanimates the lost history of public spaces through site-specific projects, while his recent work continues to investigate the past alongside the important sociopolitical issues of our time.
