Rakhshan Banietemad, “the First Lady of Iranian cinema” (Film Comment), here uses a working-class Tehran family’s lives as a window into the struggles and strangled hopes of an entire nation. Strong-willed matriarch Tuba holds the family together; the eldest son schemes to earn money and leave the country, while the youngest becomes swept up in political activism and the only daughter suffers at the hands of an abusive husband. A riveting view of a family, a city, and a country on edge, this “generational melodrama observes a blue-collar dynastic collapse worthy of Lillian Hellman, but stays steadfastly fixed on the quotidian of Tehran life” (Village Voice).
