Position Overview

The Security Supervisor leads guards in securing museum exhibitions and facilities. Specifically, this position has responsibility over a group of three professional Security Officers within our Control Room and 15 student Security Officers. The Security Supervisor performs the more difficult security duties at an advanced operational level. This job involves guarding of the BAMPFA facility including our exhibition spaces, theater, study spaces, retail spaces, and staff spaces. The duty of this position is to protect people, prevent theft, violence, or infractions of rules. The Security Supervisor both leads and assists with crowds and traffic at public programs and events.

The Security Supervisor manages midday to evening building and perimeter security, the integrity and operation of security systems, environmental and control room equipment, and activities. This job includes communicating to appropriate management regarding maintenance and security conditions; resolving complaints and providing back-up support to guards; responding to staff and museum patrons' requests for information.

The Security Supervisor recruits and trains staff and student gallery attendants and serves as the first responder. This position is on-call 24 hours for emergencies, alarm activations, environmental issues, and other serious building problems. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. The nature of the work requires some sustained physical effort involving considerable standing and walking for extended periods of time. Incumbents may be required to work any shift, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

Facility Security and Supervision

  • Supervise Control Room staff, including student attendants and other personnel assigned to protective service duties, including acting as Gallery Attendant Supervisor when required. Manage the schedule to meet the staff requirements for general operations and events. Manage timecards and training for the Control Room team.
  • Serves as backup to correct and approve student gallery attendant timecards. Ensure Control Team members are alert, properly trained, and adhere to established procedures and security protocols. Provides regular performance feedback and management to subordinate staff.

Facility Management

  • Take charge of the facility's security during swing shift, ensuring that all areas, including restricted areas, are securely closed and monitored. In conjunction with the Gallery Attendant supervisor on duty, participate in the closing of galleries, verifying that all gallery attendants have completed their duties, and the facility is secure. Supervises the closing of the facility.
  • Works with campus officers responsible for building and or security services and works on special projects. Works with campus and professional repair services and conducts minor maintenance and repairs on systems. Other duties as assigned.

Visitor Assistance and Incident Management

  • Assist and direct visitors, maintaining positive public relations while upholding security protocols.
  • Provide crowd control and resolve visitor concerns during operational hours and special events. Maintain a prominent presence to deter unauthorized activities, control entry to restricted areas, verify the identity of individuals seeking access, and ensure the protection of university property, particularly items with high intrinsic or monetary value.

Monitoring and Response

  • Actively monitor the facility using CCTV and other security systems to detect and respond to suspicious activity or security breaches. Respond to alarm activations and conduct inspections to identify and mitigate potential security, fire, and accident hazards and takes appropriate action to minimize risks.

Event and Operations Support

  • Provides general security and operations support. This can include covering other security posts as needed. Collaborate closely with staff to manage and oversee facility events, including set-up, clean-up, and other logistical needs. Serve as a security coordinator for special events, ensuring that security guidelines are met, and any issues are swiftly resolved to maintain order.

Records Management

  • Maintain and review security logs, recordings, and databases, ensuring that all records, particularly confidential ones, are securely handled in compliance with applicable laws and policies. Provide training as needed to ensure proper handling of sensitive information.

Control Room and Access Management

  • Serve as the direct liaison for maintaining control room systems, computers, and access control. Ensure all equipment is fully operational and that access control protocols are consistently enforced.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Serves as one of BAMPFA’s first responders to art, film, or patron-related incidents, resolving visitor concerns, etc., be prepared to take immediate action in response to emergencies or security threats, minimize risks, ensure the safety of the facility and its occupants, and coordinate with emergency services as needed. Ensures the Control Room team is trained on emergency procedures and protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of regulations regarding hazardous materials, fire codes, building codes, and all other relevant safety requirements and ability to apply concepts to operations in assigned unit.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in mentoring and advising employees. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines. Organizational skills to applied to coordinating assigned staff schedules and unit operations.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively work well with others to achieve common goals. Customer service orientation to quickly address questions or issues.
  • Ability to apply judgement to quickly evaluate issues and on the spot identify a potential solution within defined procedures and policies.
  • Interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and / or stressful situations with a multi-cultural population and escalate appropriately.
  • High School diploma and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of organization, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge and ability to monitor compliance with relevant regulatory agencies federal and state requirements.
  • Experience working in a security role in a museum.
  • Experience working with students in a professional environment.
  • First Aid, AED, Emergency preparedness trainings.

Salary & Benefits

Due to compliance with California SB-1162, BAMPFA will not be able to offer a candidate anything above the top range of this posted amount. The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $65,000-$70,000.
