Tokyo Olympiad
Ichikawa's famous documentary on the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the 93-minute American-edited version - the original was 3 hours. “I've tried to grasp the solemnity of the moment when man defies his limits and to express the solitude of the athlete who, in order to win, struggles against himself. I wished people to re-discover with astonishment that wonder which is a human being.” --Ichikawa. With stunning and meaningful use of the telephoto lens, and 164 cameramen, Ichikawa came close to realizing his aim.
