The mission of the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) is to inspire the imagination and ignite critical dialogue through art, film, and other forms of creative expression. Responsibilities:

BAMPFA has been awarded a prestigious Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which will allow us to photograph and create digital images of over 900 of BAMPFA's most requested two-dimensional artworks in the permanent collection and add an additional 1,000 already-digitized works to the online collections database. As a result of this project, images of all of these artworks will be discoverable online and freely available to the public.

Handling and Transport (50%)

  • Remove artworks from permanent storage locations and prepare for transport to on- and off-site locations. Make portfolios and boxes, wrap and collar artworks, and assist with other temporary packing.
  • Load, unload, and help transport artworks to the off-site photo studio for photography.
  • Assist in the preparation of works for the photography process and work with photographer during the sessions to move and stage works.
  • Re-package and organize artworks, and return them to their permanent locations.

Collections Care (40%)

  • Work under the direction of BAMPFA staff to rehouse and replace acidic storage materials, including interleaving and buffering materials. Build new permanent housing for artworks, such as boxes for the Asian scroll collection.
  • Assist in the organization of the artworks during the photography process so that artworks move safely in and out of the different spaces.
  • Track artworks both on paper and in the collections database as they move from location to location.
  • Measure artworks and record descriptive information to be added to the database records as needed.

Other duties as assigned (10%)

Required Qualifications

  • Experience handling a variety of artwork media according to best practices
  • Experience making and using packing materials to properly secure and safeguard artworks
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal Access to reliable transportation
  • Work well as part of a team
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs. and to climb ladders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with handling Asian artworks
  • Strong skills in box-making and housing artworks

Work Schedule

These positions will work the following specific periods of time.

Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. (30 hours)
Phase 1: April 1 - July 12, 2019
Phase 2: August 26 - December 13, 2019
Phase 3: January 27 - May 15, 2020

Salary and Benefits

The hourly salary for this position is $20.94.
