The 400 Million

Made by the Spanish Earth team, including editor Helen van Dongen, and photographed by Robert Capa, and including editor Helen van Dongen, this story of the Chinese resistance to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1938 includes remarkable footage of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek. After opening with a stunning montage depicting the bombing of coastal cities, the film takes us on an evocative tour of the history, landscape, and art of China. The last section portrays modernization underway throughout the country, linking China's battles to Western struggles for democracy. The New York Herald Tribune called The 400 Million "brilliant," describing the Hanns Eisler score as "a rich musical fabric for attention."
