Frank used a youngactress as a stand-in for himself in this "musical" about himself at amid-life juncture, perhaps crisis-questioning the value of his work, andhis decision to retreat from New York to Canada. As in Conversations inVermont, photographs are both a referent to, and a validation of, thepast of the artist. Documentary sequences of improvised music areperhaps yet another self-reference-to the soul.
