Acteon is based on the myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses in which Acteon is turned into a deer after watching Diana bathe in the nude; unable to speak, he is devoured by his own hunting dogs. Presenting its story in such a way as to include memory and possible future events, Acteon has been called “expressionist” and “experimental” in format. Jorge Grau transposes the myth to Spain's Costa Brava, where a fisherman--played by Martin Lasalle (Pickpocket)--has an encounter with a foreigner, Diana, which promises for him the chance to transcend his reality. But society threatens to devour the man who gives up his identity. Grau states, “Acteon is a myth in which a man is condemned by the gods to be unable to express himself, or to understand the dimensions of his own life or his relations with others.”
