Adam's Rib
One of the funniest of the Tracy-Hepburn "battle of the sexes" comedies, with a sassy script by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin and polished direction by George Cukor. Adam's Rib takes two marriages to court: that of Judy Holliday, hell on heels, and Tom Ewell, the philandering husband she has just sent to the critical ward in order to protect their happy home; and that of Hepburn and Tracy, lawyers on opposite sides of the Holliday case who are, in private, husband and wife. "She attacks, he blocks," writes Pauline Kael, and, in contrast to the defendant, "their skirmishes are desperately, ludicrously civilized."
