Adieu Forain

Daoud Aoulad Syad's first feature-length film, Adieu Forain is a bittersweet tribute to the forains, storytellers, troubadours, and the few remaining traveling street performers of Morocco. The film tells the story of three destinies temporarily linked, providing a look beyond postcard Morocco: Rabii, a young transvestite, is hired by Kacem, a longtime forain and owner of a carnival stand. Along with Kacem's son Larbi, former boxer and ex-convict, they crisscross the drought-stricken southern regions of Morocco. In its "quest for an elsewhere" located in the interstices of Moroccan culture, Adieu Forain evokes the return of the marginal. It is a benchmark of Moroccan cinema. The film was selected for the International Forum of New Cinema at the Berlin Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Prix at the Casablanca International Film Festival.-Tarek Elhaik
