Adieu Philippine
A French New Wave groundbreaker, virtually unknown and unseen in this country, and replete with that genre's brio and offhand humor. Watching this loose-limbed tale of a good-looking young télé technician, Michel (played by Jean-Claude Aimini, a bank clerk whom Rozier spotted on the street), and the two yéyé young ladies he casually romances, the early '60s seems an era both bracingly immediate and poignantly distant. But subtly overshadowing the gaiety of their roundabout friendships and flirtations is the fact that Michel awaits his call-up papers to the very real Algerian war, and the ache of falling in love with a boy on his way to the battlefield is conveyed with bittersweet conviction.
