Adorable

Gaynor again essays musical comedy in this delightful costume romp based on a popular German film (cowritten, incidentally, by the young Billy Wilder before he came to Hollywood). Set in a mythical European kingdom lavishly realized on the studio backlot, Adorable spotlights Gaynor as a rebellious princess prone to partying incognito with the proles. She takes a shine to a delicatessen owner (French heartthrob Henry Garat), himself a lieutenant in disguise, and bridles at the prospect of an arranged marriage to an awkward neighboring prince. The humorous tale of romance and mistaken identity is further enlivened by catchy songs and some whimsical flights of fantasy and cinematic legerdemain-as when Gaynor's slippers dance of their own accord while her bed sways to the music. Directed with panache by German expat Wilhelm (a.k.a. William) Dieterle, Adorable is indeed “a most agreeable entertainment” (New York Times).
