The Adventure of Iron Pussy
Thailand's indie filmmaker laureate Apichatpong Weerasethakul startles the world yet again. He follows his boldly experimental and sublime features Mysterious Object at Noon (2000) and the Cannes prize-winning Blissfully Yours (2002) with this outrageously over-the-top musical Western featuring a transvestite secret agent on a James Bond–like undercover mission. A former go-go boy, Iron Pussy is a 7-Eleven clerk by day and a glamorous superheroine by night, aided by his motorcycle taxi–driving sidekick Pew. Called upon by the Thai government to investigate a suspicious cache of money, Iron Pussy infiltrates a mansion as a maid and discovers a forbidden love. Based on a series of short videos by San Francisco Art Institute alumnus-and Iron Pussy himself-Michael Shaowanasai, this instant camp classic fits in with Weerasethakul's oeuvre, subsuming genres-and genders-as nonchalantly as the director blurred the boundaries between documentary and fiction in his earlier works.
