Adventures of a Wanderer

“Based on Ai Wu's novel Adventures in the South, the story takes place in 1925. A penniless, wandering student stumbles into a nest of bandits and is forced to join their band. He tries to escape from their cruel way of life but is recaptured. He is saved from the wrath of the bandit chief by the intercession of his daughter, Wildcat. She tells him the story of her family, and he realizes that her father and his companions were driven to outlawry by the injustices of society” (China Screen). “If the idea of the family is the cohesive factor of this exhibition then the feisty rebel band in Adventures of a Wanderer may be seen as a haphazard but supportive family unit. In its direct energy, use of landscape and simple narrative, Adventures is certainly an Eastern western” (Larry Kardish, Film Curator, Museum of Modern Art).
