AFGHANISTAN YEAR 1380
Last year's prize-winning Jung (War): In the Land of the Mujaheddin was an amazing film about surgeons trying against all odds to stem the flow of blood in Afghanistan. This sequel picks up the story of the European NGO Emergency aid workers post-September 11. Everything and nothing has changed. In terms of basic healthcare, Afghanistan is still in the middle ages; now add Taliban prisoners of war to those in need of medical treatment. As surgeon Gino Strada says, “They say the war has stopped but this carnage never stops.” Once again, the filmmakers shoot with heart-stopping immediacy. “What sin did I commit?” a grieving woman asks, as well she might after all logic is exhausted trying to answer why children are still maimed by landmines and their parents killed by bombs, now courtesy of the United States.
