Agujetas, Cantaor
Agujetas: this slender tree trunk of a man, with his weathered face, seems to have grown out of the rocky soil of his native Jerez, Spain. A former blacksmith who began singing in local bars at the age of eight, Agujetas is now a flamenco legend. (His father, Manuel Torre, was a great cantaor before him.) He sings of pain, suffering, fate, and bad blood; illiterate, he composes and keeps the lyrics and melodies in his head. This powerful film is the essence of flamenco, hurtling out images as rough and otherwordly as the cantaor's songs. With short: You Are What You Were Born For (Roberto Berliner, Brazil, 1998): Three blind women see shadows and light "as if in a dream." (6 mins)
