Alice
Jan Svankmajer, the Czech master of animation, has fulfilled a lifetime ambition in this personal interpretation of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland. When screened at the Bristol Animation Festival, Zuzana Princova noted: "Alice acknowledges its debt to Lewis Carroll, but it is far more than just a version of the proto-surrealist story. Familiar themes of magic, cruelty and childhood are explored by young actress Kristinka Kohoutova and a cast of beautifully animated and sinister puppets." Svankmajer's magical technique of combining strangely conceived puppets and animated objects that acquire macabre qualities brings this classic tale of childhood fantasies new and fascinating dimensions. For those unfamiliar with Jan Svankmajer, his prize students, the Quay Brothers, may offer a measure of his style. Their animated short, The Street of the Crocodiles, was one of the great treats at last year's Festival.
