Alternative Requirements 2001: Experimental Works from Bay Area Film Schools

Alternative Requirements is an annual program celebrating experimental short films and videos made by Bay Area college students. This year's selection features works in different styles-from animation (The Nightshade Family, Three Bears) to puppet films (Black Dollia, The Amazing Meat Girl); documentary (nightlight) to experiments with film emulsion (Azul, Vagus), double-projection (Pillow and Lamp), hand-cranked projection (Untitled), and performance (I Can Be Happy Trapped in a Living Room with a Rabbit That Has No Eyes). Death and religion (Syncretism), desire and anxiety (Spank the Monkey, The Girl), as well as childhood (The Angel in His Head) and mass media (Middle Grey) are variously explored. The program will also include question-and-answer discussions with the artists.Alternative Requirements is curated by a collective of UC Berkeley students as part of a film internship offered by the Film Studies Department and the Pacific Film Archive: Ken Chen, Skye Christensen, Annie Di Mascio, Paul Hunt, Julie Goulet, Sang Woo Lee, Gabriel Peters-Lazaro, Jason Quinlan, Kat Shuchter, Ted Voelkel.
