Alternative Requirements 2002: Experimental Works from Bay Area Schools

Artists in Person

Can a stop-motion short film be a work of improvisation? It can when it is a sophisticated experimental film such as a play on time. This work and many others make up the annual showcase of Bay Area student experimental works known as Alternative Requirements. Moving and inspiring, these works exemplify the diverse creative efforts alive within the Bay Area. 3 Ways to Remember Xanadu the Cat aka Sweet Pea provides comfort to anyone who has lost a pet. The Downward Trajectory of Relationships... is about, well, how love stinks. The simplicity and quirkiness of Orange Crush resonates like a strange dream from the night before. Traffic in Waves makes the unbearable and monotonous experience of traffic into a kaleidoscope of beauty and simplicity. This festival is dedicated to the collective experiences of our community, and a testament to the passions that are part of it. Trust us, you'll never look at an orange the same way again.-Sheeda Jamsheed

Alternative Requirements is curated by a collective of UC Berkeley students as part of a film internship offered by the Film Studies Program and the Pacific Film Archive. The student curators are Sohail Afiat, David Golovin, Sheeda Jamsheed, Kenji Lui, Nate Ramm, and Wilda Wong.
