Alternative Requirements: Experimental Works from Bay Area Schools
Tonight's program presents an array of work by Bay Area students that reflects a diversity of perspectives, from the disorienting and hostile to the tender and familiar. I Thought You Might Be There (Selene Foster, 7 mins, Silent, B&W, DVD), Stimulus (Seokhan Ryu, 2003, 5 mins, B&W), and A Light (Seongsin Jeon, 7 mins, Silent, 16mm) hypnotize with their textural complexities. Macroscope (Brian Relph, 2003, 5 mins, 16mm) dissolves a human figure in stellar washes of color, and Numerical Engagements (Chelsea Walton, 4 mins, 16mm) conveys the gentle dislocation of air travel. Anomie (Denah Johnston, 8 mins, B&W, 16mm) surveys memories of war, while Like Being at Quaker Lake (Amanda Movlai, 2 mins) and Under the Water (Au Wah-Hei, 1.5 mins, DVD) evoke the pastel lens of nostalgia. Our memory is tested by Word Association (Neal Hartman, 2003, 5 mins), and challenged by the looped mystery of The Window (Jannie Chang, 2.5 mins, DVD), while Polka (Jeannette Bokhour, 2 mins, DVD) asks us to dance. While They Sleep (Michael Reyes, 7 mins) imagines a neighborhood of dreamers, and Kana-Shabari (Akiko Shinomiya, 6 mins, DVD) a sole sleeper. Reincarnation (Gyeong-Tae Roh, 6 mins) and buffalo lifts (Christina Battle, 2 mins, Silent, 16mm) animate creatures of nature; Something in the Water (Chihcheng Peng, 2003, 5 mins) tosses stones across a digital beach.-Eric Brownell, Dianne de Guzman
