Amateurs

A young girl seeks out a father she has never met in this involving, intricate portrait of loneliness and human stubbornness, from the codirector of festival favorite Sud Express. Simultaneously wild and introverted, teenage French track star Blanca finds herself in a Marseilles orphanage after her beloved mother suddenly dies. Searching for the Spanish father she only knows from stories, she travels to the dreary Madrid suburb of Vallecas. There she finds a lonely elderly foreman who probably isn't her father, but at least he seems fatherly. Velázquez turns this tale of two mismatched individuals, separated by age and nationality yet united by unholy temperament and utter obstinacy, into an exploration of the need for connection and the desire for family. Actors Emilie De Preissac and Francisco Luque, well-matched in strength of will, anchor the work.
